Tea Road Heritage Festival took place in western Khovd province. The event was organized to promote and inherit tangible and intangible heritage, folk arts and tea culture of many ethnic groups and to develop local tourism. The five-day festival features mini-Naadam festival, camel caravan, horsemen competition, a scientific conference, and short-distance tours. Moreover, the fifth international festival of khuumii or throat singing, as well as many interesting performances of contortion, epic poem, flute and Mongolian folk dance, took place during the festival. To expand tourism activities in 2017, China, Mongolia, and Russia started a joint project of reviving the ancient Tea road, as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. The route was a trade route that was officially recognized by a treaty between Russia and the Chinese Qing (Manchu) Dynasty in 1689. In Mongolia, camel caravans transported bricks of tea through the Gobi to (what was then) Urga which is now called (Ulaanbaatar).
