The project aims to build resilience to flooding in the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar as well as to reduce vulnerability to wind and dust storms and air pollution.

The Ulaanbaatar City Environmental Department announced that the Kyoto Protocol Adaptation Fund (AF) Board has approved a 4.5 million USD project in Mongolia.  The project aims to build resilience to flooding in the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar as well as to reduce vulnerability to wind and dust storms and air pollution. Ger districts are located at the edges of the capital city Ulaanbaatar where almost half of the city residents inhabit the areas. The ger districts are not connected to the central heating and plumbing systems thus become the main source of soil and air pollutions in the city. The Kyoto Protocol Adaptation Fund Board approved the implementation of four new climate change adaptation projects across Asia and Western and Southern Africa. The total budget for these projects amounts to 35 million USD. Since 2010, the Adaptation Fund has committed more than 500 million USD for nearly 80 climate change adaptation projects. It is estimated that more than 5 million people have benefited from these projects.
