Transport specialists have conducted a research on establishing inland ports in Mongolia to enhance the exports of the nation. Technical and economic feasibility studies for the first port have begun, which will be in Khushig Khundii, which is located in 57km from the capital city to the south. Accordingly, Mongolia exports 4.9 billion USD of products annually, which puts the nation in the seventh largest exporter among other landlocked countries. Researchers suggest that landlocked countries need to make products based on available resources that are cost-effective and have value in the international market. In addition, researchers emphasize that landlocked countries can mitigate their disadvantages by leveraging their geography and developing logistics services such as establishing inland ports. According to Land-Locked organization website, the term inland port is used in a narrow sense in the field of transportation systems to mean a rather more specialized facility that has come about with the advent of the standardized shipping container in international transport. Rather than goods being loaded and unloaded in such ports, shipping containers can just be transferred between ship and road vehicle or ship and train. The container may be transferred again between road and rail elsewhere and the goods are only loaded or unloaded at their point of origin or final destination.
