Mongolian cabinet authorized export of non-breeding small ruminants from rural areas where no cases of livestock contagious diseases have registered.

The Mongolian cabinet authorized the export of non-breeding small ruminants from the rural areas where no cases of livestock contagious diseases have registered. The decision was made in correlation with increasing livestock growth and adequacy of hay and fodder, and income of herding households. Ministers and officials in charge were tasked to negotiate with the corresponding Ministries and specialized organizations of the importer countries, and provide policy, assistance and management for provincial administrations. Governors of certain provinces have been assigned to conduct necessary examination and inspection of meat for export to meet with the standards required by the importer country. According to studies, that 11 million heads of livestock are required for Mongolia’s annual domestic demand of meat, and export of about 6 million heads of livestock is potentially viable, without posing threats to the gene pool of the animals. So far, Mongolia has established meat export agreements with the People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation, Vietnam and Iran, and exported 18 thousand tons of meat. The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry estimates that 27.4 thousand tons of meat can be exported this year.
