March 21 celebrates International Day of Forests.
March 21 celebrates International Day of Forests. To mark the Day, a national conference entitled “Mongolia’s policy on forests, science and technology” was held in Ulaanbaatar. The total forest area of Mongolia is 17.5 million ha or 11.2% of the total land area. Forest reserves of Mongolia decrease due to illegal logging, forest fires and pests. Since the 1950’s the nation’s forest area decreased almost two times to make 6.7% of the total territory excluding the Saxaul forest. Since the 1970’s 125 thousand hectares of the Saxaul forest were completely destroyed under firewood and some 500 thousand hectares was damaged desertification.
