At the invitation of Foreign Minister of Mongolia Battsetseg Batmunkh, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland David Cameron paid an official visit to Mongolia on April 25-26, 2024. The Foreign Secretary also visited Secondary School No. 23 in Ulaanbaatar and observed the implementation of the Pearson English language program in Mongolia. The UK Foreign Secretary announced that the UK will provide GBP 10 million over three years to support the implementation of the English language program in Mongolia. In the 2022-2023 academic year, Pearson's English language program was piloted at thirty-eight secondary schools. By 2024, the program had expanded to include 140,000 pupils in grades 5 and 6 in all public secondary schools. In 2025, the number of pupils participating in the Pearson program is expected to increase further. Under the Education Law adopted in 2023, English was established as the first foreign language to be studied in secondary schools. Starting on September 1, 2024, third graders will begin studying the English language. Additionally, teachers will receive advanced-level training to support this initiative. In addition to the Pearson English language program, Mongolia is collaborating with Cambridge University to enhance its educational sector. This partnership includes multistage initiatives aimed at establishing and strengthening an internationally recognized general education system in Mongolia.
