The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is set to visit Mongolia later this week. The historical context of Mongolia-Germany relations dates back to the Cold War era when Germany recognized the Mongolian People's Republic. Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, the two nations have developed active cooperation across various sectors. The partnership encompasses political, defense, economic, development policy, education, culture, and humanitarian aspects. Germany has been actively supporting Mongolia's development through financial aid since 1991, providing 529.6 million euros. In 2023, Germany committed an additional 78 million for concessional loans and aid, targeting areas like mineral resources, industry, technology, and national health programs. Trade and economic cooperation are deemed crucial, with Germany being one of the world's leading economies. The mining industry collaboration, initiated with an intergovernmental agreement in 2011, highlights the establishment of the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology, contributing significantly to education and employment. Tourism is identified as a promising area, with efforts to attract German tourists through improved infrastructure and promotion. Education cooperation is exemplified by Mongolian students studying in Germany, and recent initiatives, like the "President’s Scholar - 2100" scholarship program, demonstrate the ongoing collaboration. The 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Germany is a significant milestone, marked by the State Visit of the German President. The visit is seen as an opportunity to reflect on past achievements and set the direction for future cooperation, potentially advancing the Comprehensive Partnership between the two nations. Mongolia's active foreign relations, achieving diplomatic ties with all UN member countries, indicate a commitment to continuity, independence, balance, and openness in foreign policy. The focus for 2024 is on attracting more foreign countries to visit Mongolia, showcasing the nation's potential on the global stage.
