The most northern Khuvsgul province declared this year a “Year to Visit Khuvsgul” in order to develop sustainable tourism based on natural, historical, and cultural heritage. In the framework of this initiative, 11 special events are going to be held to increase the number of domestic and foreign tourists who visit the province. The Snow and Reindeer festival to develop winter tourism, and promote the culture and heritage of Darhad and Tsaatan people used to be organized by the locals, but since 2018, the scope of the festival has been expanded to include other soums. Thus, this year the festival will be held on the 27th and 28th of February in Tsagaannuur soum of Khuvsgul province. During this festival, visitors can experience how darkhad and tsaatan people adapt and live in taiga and enjoy traditional winter sports, such as the reindeer race and “Khaag” ski racing, and other exciting events. In addition, the festival gives visitors chances to get to know darkhad and tsaatan people’s life, how they live off of reindeer and hunting for many centuries in this remote region, and their food and drink culture.
