USAID workshop among members of Mongolia’s Parliament discusses increasing citizen engagement

On May 4, The United States Agency for International Development , organized a discussion with members of Mongolia’s Parliament, or State Great Khural, on ways to increase citizen engagement

  The event is the latest in a series of workshops on legislative transparency taking place under USAID’s Strengthening Women and Youth Engagement in the Electoral and Political Processes in Mongolia (SWYEEPPM) program.

The discussion focused on ways to utilize both traditional media and new digital platforms to engage constituents, as well as best practices and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.  Speaker G. Zandanshatar opened the forum, and former U.S. Representative Bob Goodlatte provided the keynote address.  

“The United States and Mongolia’s shared commitment to democracy is the cornerstone of our flourishing strategic partnership,” said USAID’s Senior Development Advisor for Mongolia, Gary Robbins. “USAID’s assistance is helping ensure that citizen concerns are informing national-level decision-making.” 

USAID’s three-year (2020-2023) SWYEEPPM project, implemented in partnership with the Consortium for Elections & Political Process Strengthening, International Republican Institute, and the Asia Foundation, is raising the voices of women and youth in Mongolia’s democracy, empowering voters to engage civically, and supporting transparency and responsive governance.  

Since 1991, USAID has supported long-term, sustainable development in Mongolia by strengthening democracy, fostering private sector development, and diversifying the economy to solidify its path to greater independence and self-reliance.
