Mongolia will allocate over 8,600 hectares of land free of charge for families this year.

Mongolia will allocate over 8,600 hectares of land free of charge for families this year. The government will also allocate 30 hectares of land to business people who want to grow potatoes and vegetables. Last year, 32,000 Mongolians owned over 3,400 hectares of land free of charge. As the Department of Land Privatization Management of the Ulaanbaatar Property Relations Agency said, those residing in the capital are also able to own land in rural areas for free. According to the law on land allocation, the size of land allocated for ownership for family needs varies depending on location. In Ulaanbaatar and along the national level main roads connecting provinces with the capital, individuals are entitled to up to 700 square meters, while in the province centers up to 3500 square meters, and in administrative subdivisions centers and villages up to 5,000 square meters, respectively. Foreign citizens and companies who are not permitted to own land can only use it under definite conditions and terms. The total land area of Mongolia is around 1,564,000 square km. However, over half of its three million populations live in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. Since 2013, over 191,000 residents of the Mongolian capital privatized around 101 square km of land for family needs.
