The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Mongolia Program Office is to implement a project on protecting snow leopards in Mongolia's westernmost province Bayan-Ulgii. The project will be implemented in cooperation with Environment and Tourism Office of the province, extending area of Sair Mountain locates in Tolbo soum and Khatuugiin Nuruu in Bugat soum. Within the framework of the project, actions including population census of snow leopard, management for hunting area and proper pasture land use and taking necessary areas under local protection are planned, said Aibek, Director of the Environment and Tourism Office of the province. The 5-year project will be launched on May 1. There are 500-1,000 snow leopards in Mongolia, according to a survey conducted in 2000. Mongolia is home to the second largest snow leopard population in the world, but sadly their numbers continue to plummet because of the poaching for fur and bones, loss of prey species, loss of habitat and other factors.
