On December 31, Japan’s Abema TV broadcast a New Year’s special show called “Defeat Asashoryu and get 10 million JPY” which challenged the 68th Yokozuna or Grand Champion of the professional sumo wrestler on the sumo ring for the first time in the past seven years since his retirement. The toughest opponents he had to face were Bob Sapp, an American professional wrestler and mixed martial artist, Kotomitsuki Keiji, a former ozeki (second highest rank) and Hiroshi Izumi, Olympics silver medalist Japanese judoka. To all Mongolians delight, Asashoryu Dagvadorj overwhelmingly defeated all eight opponents and won 10 million JPY (approximately 88,200 USD). He was not only the 68th yokozuna, sumo’s highest rank but also undoubtedly one of the most successful yokozunas ever in the history of the sport in Japan. He became the first Mongolian to reach the yokozuna rank in January 2003 and in 2005, he became the first wrestler to win all six official tournaments in a single year. Over his entire career, he won 25 top division tournament championships, placing him fourth on the all-time list.
