Mongolia is to buy fodder from Russia. The Mongolian National Emergency Committee held a meeting to discuss measures and strategies for preparing for the coming winter. According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industries, this year 150 soums have been hit by drought and, as a result, have not been able to prepare the fodder which the livestock need for the winter. To remedy this situation, Mongolia is planning to buy 400 thousand tonnes of fodder from Russia. The last winter was a very harsh one in Mongolia following an especially dry summer - decimating tens of thousands of head of livestock; this is a weather pattern unique to the country and known locally as a 'dzud'. The Mongolian Meteorology Centre has warned that Mongolia is facing another harsh winter this year.
