Earthquake disaster prevention day was held. The Emergency Management Department of the capital city organized a public awareness event with the aim to ensure safety during earthquakes. It’s the government decision to mark “Earthquake awareness and prevention day” on the fourth Wednesday of March every year to conduct a nationwide campaign of awareness and training citizens on prevention, risk reduction, preparedness and rescue actions. More than half of the territory of Mongolia belongs to the possible 7-8 magnitude earthquake zone and some 20 per cent to the possible 9 and more magnitude earthquake zone. Some 75 per cent of local cities and settlements are located in 7 and more magnitude earthquake zones. Therefore, it is vitally important that all citizens have some knowledge and awareness regarding earthquake disaster. There have been established 33 temporary shelters, and 40 points have been defined to be used during earthquakes in the scope of a project ‘Disaster resistant Ulaanbaatar” which is being implemented in partnership with the World vision Mongolia.
