Mongolia adopts international travel document standards. The Cabinet determined that regular travel passports will be issued with 5-year and 10-year validity period, and won’t be extended. Specifically, chip-embedded regular passports will have 10-year validity and chi-less passports will have 5-year validity. Mongolian travelers with extended passports face the risk of being denied international flights and entry to foreign countries. This is because, in 2004, the 12th session of International Civil Aviation Organization’s meeting in Cairo issued a protocol regarding biometric technology in machine readable travel documents which included instructions such as not extending the validity of machine readable travel documents and not accepting extended passports as machine readable travel documents. Therefore, the Cabinet has thus decided to change the current travel document policy in compliance with international standards.
