Ulaanbaatar’s Municipality prohibits migration to capital city in order to reduce air pollution. The decision is made in the best interest of the capital city residents, told the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar Mr. Batbold Sundui. All migration to the capital city from the countryside except those people who require long-term medical treatment and those who purchased apartments shall be prohibited until January 1, 2018. Other actions to reduce the air pollution in the capital city include banning the sale of stoves, except those using biofuel and gas, establishment of new settlement areas for rural migrants far from the capital city, and restriction of the city’s expansion. The Municipal Office pledged to gradually replace stoves that burn raw coal. Some 300,000 households in the capital city's slum districts burn raw coal, plastics and rubber tires for heating and cooking in their homes. The smoke generated by these households is the primary cause of the air pollution in Ulan Bator, researchers said. Those poor households that burn raw coal will be given improved, efficient fuel to burn in their stoves. If people stop burning coal, air pollution will be reduced, said the Mayor.
