Weather forecast warns of more snowfalls and snow storms. More than average snowfalls were observed in past October and November and more than half of Mongolia’s territory is covered with snow. A 'zud' alert has been announced for 18 soums or districts in eight of 21 provinces of Mongolia. A 'zud' is when the weather is so harsh, that the livestock either starves to death when the thick, icy snow buries the grass or simply freeze because of the cold. Although November, isn’t normally the coldest winter month in Mongolia, the Research Institute for Hydrology and Meteorology has reported that temperatures have fallen as low as -47C recent days. Some districts of the westernmost Khovd province are covered by 25-35 cm of snow caused by the ‘zud’ which hits the region this November. Because of 3-4 day's heavy snowfall, coal transport by road through the ‘Barlag’ mountain pass to China had been interrupted. The Ministry of Agriculture initiated “Good will campaign to help herders” and urges the Mongolian people, organizations and businesses as well as foreign embassies, donor countries and international community to collect donations, warm clothes, food supplies, medicaments, grass and forage for livestock in help to Mongolian herders to cope the cold winter.
