Mongolia and Japan agree to strengthen ties further. Mongolian Prime Minister Jargaltulga Erdenebat and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed at the talks during his 4-day visit in Tokyo to accelerate ongoing efforts to draw up a 2017-21 action plan to strengthen bilateral ties. Mongolia’s PM chose Japan as the destination of his first diplomatic tour after he was appointed in early July, underlining his intention to place great importance on Mongolia’s ties with Japan. Japan's cooperation has the potential to help Mongolia diversify its economy, lessening its dependence on natural resources such as coal and copper. The PMs agreed to accelerate the formulation of a new medium-term action plan for facilitating the Mongolia-Japan bilateral strategic partnership. Moreover, the leaders had agreed to draw up the new plan when they last met on the sidelines of a regional summit in Ulan Bator in July, shortly after Mongolia's parliamentary election. On the sidelines of the ongoing visit of Prime Minister J.Erdenebat to Japan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Minister-Counsellor of the Japan Embassy in Ulaanbaatar have exchanged notes on exemption of visa for holders of diplomatic passports for travels within 30 days.
