Pastures, conservation and climate Action of Mongolia is studied. The project was set up as a result of a research project by the University of Leicester and Mongolian Society for Range Management (MSRM), with the aim to develop and implement novel approaches to conservation in Mongolia. The program is being implemented at three sites in Mongolia in collaboration with more than 100 herder households with territories covering a total area of some 77.000 ha. Participating herder groups receive direct payment for ecosystem services (PES) over the initial 4 years. The projected payments offer the prospect of real transformations in livelihoods, in conjunction with protection and conservation of a valuable and internationally recognized biodiversity heritage. The project will result in greater livelihoods and food security. Through the active participation of herders in ecosystem service restoration, pastures will become more resilient through the reduction of soil erosion and overgrazing.
