National program on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation officially launches. The UNDP program aims to support the Government of Mongolia in designing and implementing a national program on “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation” Strategy. The program will also contribute to the implementation of the national Green Development Policy aligned with the global commitment to shift the current development trends to low carbon, socially inclusive and equitable development. Mongolia became a partner country of the UN-REDD Program in 2011 and has quickly taken steps to start implementing REDD+ readiness activities. Within the UN REDD program, Mongolia is the first country with boreal forest, the carbon stock of which is predominantly in its underground mass. Although a number of steps are being made towards sustainable forest management, forest loss is still an issue in Mongolia. As such, there is a high potential for Mongolia to benefit from the initiative in view of the changing climate. Mongolia’s unique geographic location and its socioeconomic conditions make the country vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Within the last 70 years, the mean air temperature increased three times faster than the global average in Mongolia. The climate change scenarios indicate conditions that are not suitable for forested areas, yet expansion of dry steppe and desert zones further to north. Therefore, Mongolia will need to adopt decisive and assertive policies and measures in relation to land use and forest management.
