This week is predicted to be the coldest period of winter in Mongolia. According to the weather forecast, continuous snowfall, snowstorms are expected and temperatures are expected to persist on average of below -35 degrees Celsius during daytime and -48 degrees during night in the coming weeks. Presently, snow has covered 90 per cent of the total territory with conditions getting more severe, with the thickness of snow cover between 10 and 40 cm. The National Emergency Management Authority’s assessment report reveals that currently 16 of 21 provinces are in Dzud state which is a cyclical slow onset disaster unique to Mongolia. The Dzud affect badly Mongolia's herding community who practice pastoral livestock breeding. In the Dzud satte there is a higher demand for hay and fodder due to excessive snowfall. The cabinet at its recent meeting organized medical assistance to herders, delivery of commodities and grass and fodder to affected areas. Some 6600 tons of hay and 2700 tons of fodder have been distributed to 4 provinces, which are covered with more than 40-cm thick snow.
